My Incredible Witchfest Experience

I went to Witchfest this past weekend, and it was a mind blowing experience. We made African metal history! You can read aΒ Times Live SA article on Witchfest here.

Here are some of the highlights of the festival…

Thursday:

  1. It was my 3 year anniversary with my boyfriend and we were really excited for the festival to start.
  2. We set up camp in a lovely shaded area. I think we got the best camping spot – we had 2 trees and 2 gazebos. Our camp started out with only the planned people, and expanded when people we knew arrived and wanted to camp with us. Eventually we were a huge group and our two gazebos and many chairs weren’t enough for everyone!

Friday:

  1. My friend’s band Scroll of Thoth kicked off the festival at 12:15.
  2. We checked out the stall and bought some cool stuff.
  3. I got to meet and interview Alestorm – one of my favourite bands! After the interview we chatted for almost an hour.
  4. Seeing Alestorm live was incredible – I was right in front. During the show, Christopher Bowes (vocals and keytar) made eye contact with me and sang the entire chorus of my favourite songΒ to me. Elliot Vernon (keyboards) saw me taking photos of him and pulled a funny face at me.
  5. After the show, I ran backstage to try to speak to the band. Gareth Murdock (bass guitar) greeted me with a hug, we spoke for a while and he gave me one of his picks with his signature on.
  6. I watched Decapitated with my boyfriend and we met the band after the show.

Me with Alestorm!

Saturday:

  1. I saw local power metal band Strident live and they were incredible.
  2. We chilled with Henk Kruger from ING for a while and watched them play.
  3. Belphegor’s performance was phenomenal and after the show we attended the meet and greet where I got one of the bones from their mic stand, as well as a guitar pick and their autographs.
  4. Although I’m not a Cannibal Corpse fan, I enjoyed watching their show. Corpsegrinder’s energy and strength to headbang throughout the entire show was quite impressive.

Sunday:

  1. I discovered how cool Martin Rocka & The Sick ShopΒ is. I ran from my tent to go watch these guys when I heard them play!
  2. I saw my favourite local band Terminatryx again and took a selfie with them (their idea!).
  3. I met Epica thanks to my friend Charl who bought me the VIP add-on. They were all very nice and Simone Simons told me that my tattoo is beautiful.
  4. Fleshgod Apocalypse‘s performance was incredible – by far the best live performance I have ever seen. I saw these guys back in 2012 and I can’t believe how much they have improved since then. All I can say is wow!
  5. Septicflesh was almost just as spectacular as Fleshgod.
  6. Epica brought the festival to a close with a spectacular performance. I had goosebumps for almost the entire show.

I’d like to say a huge thank you to Witchdoctor Productions for this historic event for African metal history! The lineup was better than many international festivals and the urban camping was a unique and exciting experience.

Tickets for Witchfest 2016 will go on sale at the end of the month and I’ll definitely be getting mine as soon as possible!
